Math Activity: Pattern Block Angles
Purpose: Explore lines of symmetry and rotational symmetry.
Materials: Pattern blocks or pattern block app, paper, color
- Math Learning Center Pattern Blocks Links to an external site., nice protractor, shareable
- Toy Theater Pattern Blocks Links to an external site., dragging feels real
Directions:
First, identify the symmetries of each pattern block, then use the pattern blocks to create various other symmetric figures.
Part 1: Identify the symmetries of each pattern block below. Draw sketches and/or write descriptions for each.
Block | Lines of symmetry | Rotational Symmetry |
Part 2: Be more creative and create new figures from the pattern blocks.
Figure and name | Lines of symmetry | Rotational symmetry |
Example: Equiangular hexagon |
There are two lines of symmetry, vertically and horizontally cutting it in half. | If you rotate the figure 180 degrees, then you get the same shape. That is the smallest angle for rotational symmetry. |
