Course Description:
Math 213: The student will study and demonstrate knowledge of topics of geometry, probability, statistics, and other topics in elementary mathematics.
Prerequisites: MTH212 or equivalent as determined by department. (Credits: 4)
Required Materials:
-
- Bennett, Albert, 2018, Mathematics for Elementary Teachers: A Conceptual Approach, 10th ed., McGraw-Hill. Online.
- Course Objectives:
-
To review and explore fundamental concepts of mathematics.
-
To explore how mathematical skills and concepts can be taught.
-
To learn to appreciate mathematics as a discipline, a science, and an art form.
-
To enjoy mathematics.
Student Outcomes: After completion of this course the student will demonstrate proficiency in the following areas:
- Implementing various problem-solving strategies;
- Descriptive statistics including charts, graphs, measures of center, spread, and relative position, samples and distributions.
- Geometric figures, geometric transformations, and measurement.
Method of Instruction: This will be an in-depth experience in basic mathematics, where we explore "why" as well as "how". This is a mathematics course first and foremost, though we will explore some teaching methods and pedagogy where appropriate and when time permits. You are expected to interact with your instructor and your peers weekly. Hands on activities will be explored regularly. Group and individual work will be assigned in most weeks.
Expectations: Your punctual observation of due dates is expected along with your most sincere effort. You are expected to have a notebook for notes from the textbook, notes from class or videos, and homework problems. You are expected to have time for this class, at least 12 hours each week on average.
Although the instructor assumes that no cheating will take place, any evidence of cheating will be pursued thoroughly and dealt with strictly. A negative grade (-100%) will be assigned on the first instance of cheating; An F in the course will be assigned on the second. Please refer to the college's Academic Dishonesty policy Links to an external site. for more details.
You are also expected to be considerate in class, upholding the utmost respect for the educational environment. If you are inconsiderate, then you may be asked to leave. Otherwise, try to enjoy the class.
You are expected to communicate regularly with your Instructor. I will get back to you within 24 hours during the week and with 48 hours over the weekend. You can expect me to work with you answering your questions to the best of my ability. Please set an appointment with me if the tutorial hours don't work with your schedule. However, if you need assistance beyond what I offer to you, then it us up to you to seek me out.
Homework: For each section covered there will be multiple assignments.
- A reading assignment from the text.
- Interactive homework for each section that are repeatable until the due date.
- Math activities applying the skills and concepts you have learned, that could be applied to some elementary school classrooms. Some of these activities will be submitted only to your instructor, and others will be submitted for the rest of the class.
You should work through these problems & activities regularly so that you keep up with the material covered, if not get ahead. Assigned sections should be read through prior to completing homework and activities. Reading assignments must be completed before the due date, otherwise a grade of zero will be assigned.
Late Work: Some late work will be accepted and some will not. Reading assignments must be completed before the due date, otherwise you will not get credit. For some homework sets, you have latepasses that may be used to extend the homework for 48 hours per latepass. Activities must be completed no more than a week after the due date. Discussion forums must be completed by the indicated due date, and late submissions will count for no more that 50%.
Testing Procedures: There will be a midterm exam, a final project, and a comprehensive final exam. The final project and exam must be completed in the week of June 6 through 9, 2022.
Method of Evaluation:
Your final grade will be a weighted average of all of your graded work.
Reading/Discussion | 20% | A is ≥ 90%
Homework | 20% | B is ≥ 80% | |
Activities | 30% | C is ≥ 70%
Midterm Exam | 10% | D is ≥ 60%
Final Project & Exam | 20% | F is < 60% |
Special Services and Student Accommodations: Students requiring assistance beyond the services provided in the regular classroom activities must seek out the instructor after class. Additional assistance is available at the Special Programs Tutoring Center.
