Math Activity: Descriptive Statistics

Purpose: Apply basic descriptive statistics to a data set to summarize it.

Materials: Home Prices spreadsheet file, 2019, Pendleton or Hermiston Links to an external site..

Directions: Open this file in Google Sheets or Download it to MS Excel or your favorite spreadsheet or statistics application.
Select either the Pendleton home prices or the Hermiston home prices.

Make at least one histogram.

Calculate the following summary statistics.

Minimum

Quartile 1

Median

Quartile 3

Maximum

Make a box plot with StatKey Links to an external site.. Take a screenshot of the box plot. Insert it into your spreadsheet and resize it so that its horizontal scale aligns with the horizontal scale of your histogram.

Based on the charts and the summary statistics, write a paragraph summarizing the 2019 home prices of the town you chose. Your summary should include descriptions of what the shapes of the charts tell us and some of the summary statistics.
