Course Description:

Math 213: The student will study and demonstrate knowledge of topics of geometry, probability, statistics, and other topics in elementary mathematics.
Prerequisites: MTH212 or equivalent as determined by department. (Credits: 4)

Required Materials:

Bennett, Albert, 2018, Mathematics for Elementary Teachers: A Conceptual Approach, 10th ed., McGraw-Hill. Online.
Course Objectives:
  • To review and explore fundamental concepts of mathematics.

  • To explore how mathematical skills and concepts can be taught.

  • To learn to appreciate mathematics as a discipline, a science, and an art form.

  • To enjoy mathematics.

Student Outcomes: After completion of this course the student will demonstrate proficiency in the following areas:

  • Implementing various problem-solving strategies;
  • Descriptive statistics including charts, graphs, measures of center, spread, and relative position, samples and distributions.
  • Geometric figures, geometric transformations, and measurement.

Method of Instruction: This will be an in-depth experience in basic mathematics, where we explore "why" as well as "how". This is a mathematics course first and foremost, though we will explore some teaching methods and pedagogy where appropriate and when time permits. Although we were hoping to meet face to face each week, we will instead meet virtually. We can talk on the phone, through video chat, and through email. I will have question and answer video chats on most days. You are required to attend at least one online meeting with me each week. These will occur Monday and Wednesday from 3 to 4 PM. For other times see the Weekly Calendar link above. You are expected to interact with your instructor and your peers weekly. Hands on activities will be explored regularly. Group and individual work will be assigned in most weeks.

Expectations: You are expected to communicate with your instructor and classmates weekly. Although the instructor assumes that no cheating will take place, any evidence of cheating will be pursued thoroughly and dealt with strictly. A negative grade (-100%) will be assigned on the first instance of cheating; An F in the course will be assigned on the second. You are also expected to be considerate in class, upholding the utmost respect for the educational environment. If you are inconsiderate, then you may be asked to leave. Otherwise, try to enjoy the class.
You are expected to communicate regularly with your Instructor. I will get back to you within 24 hours during the week and with 48 hours over the weekend.
Team work is important for this class. Please contribute to the live video chats and group discussion forums.

Homework: For each section covered there will be multiple assignments.

  • A reading assignment from the text and through the McGraw-Hill Connect link. This will include writing to a class discussion forum about what has gone well or not and replying to a classmate with substantial feedback.
  • Interactive homework for each section that are repeatable until the due date.
  • Math activities applying the skills and concepts you have learned, that could be applied to some elementary school classrooms. Some of these activities will be submitted only to your instructor, and others will be submitted for the rest of the class.

You should work through these problems & activities regularly so that you keep up with the material covered, if not get ahead. Assigned sections should be read through prior to completing homework and activities. Reading assignments must be completed before the due date, otherwise a grade of zero will be assigned.

Late Work: Some late wok will be accepted and some will not. Reading assignments must be completed before the due date, otherwise you will not get credit. For homework sets, you have latepasses that may be used to extend the homework for 48 hours per latepass. Activities must be completed no more than a week after the due date. Discussion forums must be completed by the indicated due date, and late submissions will count for no more that 50%.

Testing Procedures: There will be a midterm exams, a final project, and a comprehensive final exam, but NO exit exam. The final project and exam must be completed in the week of June 8 through 11, 2020.

Method of Evaluation:
Your final grade will be a weighted average of all of your graded work.

Reading/Discussion  20%   A is ≥ 90%
 Homework  20%   B is ≥ 80%
 Activities  30%   C is ≥ 70%
 Midterm Exam  10%   D is ≥ 60%
 Final Project & Exam   20%   F is < 60%
