Course Description

This course is designed to prepare students for a lifetime of enjoyable mountain bike riding. Emphasis will be placed on the development of skills necessary to safely climb, descend, and maneuver a mountain bike through technical areas on various terrains, as well as maintain the bike properly.

Course Outcomes

  • Learn to bicycle safely, efficiently, and enjoyably.
  • Learn to shift just before a change in conditions.
  • Learn to ascend and descend through switchbacks.
  • Learn to dismount and mount bicycle on slopes.
  • Learn to descend safely and efficiently.
  • Learn to climb safely and efficiently.
  • Explore cadence vs power.
  • Learn to pace yourself on longer rides.
  • Learn basic bicycle maintenance

Requirements

  • A mountain bicycle
  • A helmet
  • Eye protection
  • Gloves (optional, but recommended)
  • Patch kit, tire levers, spare tube, pump
  • Appropriate clothing
  • Water (minimum 1 liter per class ride)
  • Transportation to bike path entrance by airport

Day 1

3 PM. Meet at BMCC McCray Activity Center to review safety policy, bike inspection, and equipment check.

Day 2

2:50 PM. Meet at MAC and then commute to bike path entrance by airport.

All other days

3 PM. Meet at upper bike path entrance, unless notified otherwise.

Expectations:

  • Show up on time for class each day.
  • Cycle responsibly

Grading:

You will be graded on the number of rides that you do.

Group, makeup rides will occur on most weekends

Alternative makeup activities

  • Ride on your own and record the ride
  • Attend a yoga class
  • I’m open to other ideas.

Grading Scheme

  • A ≥ 16 rides
  • B ≥ 13 rides
  • C ≥ 10 rides
  • D ≥ 7 rides
  • F < 7 rides
