Plagiarism, Copyright and Fair Use

The work you'll do in this course will include reading articles or other information online (e.g. news stories) then summarizing and writing an opinion. You'll also search for and use images or other sources in your own projects.

We'll continue to stress and discuss the following points regarding fair use of information throughout the course:

  • When summarizing and commenting on an article or information found online, you must read and understand the text then use your own words to summarize it. Copying any part of an article without explicitly quoting it is plagiarism! Any submissions that include plagiarism will receive no credit.
  • Images are everywhere on the internet but just because you found an image online doesn't mean you have the right to use it. In this course you will learn to search for images you have the right to use. Whenever you use an image in your projects you must include a proper citation and the license information for the image. If you can't find a license for an image you probably don't have rights to use it! You will lose points for any image without a license or citation.
  • Just because an image has a license doesn't mean you have the right to use it. Read the license carefully to understand whether your use of the image is allowed.
  • When in doubt, you can't use it!
