Math Activity 2.1: Sorting and Classifying Attribute Pieces

Purpose: Use attribute pieces to sort and classify according to shared characteristics.

Materials: Attribute Pieces

1. Make a pattern with attribute pieces by changing only one attribute at a time.
   You can draw the shapes and/or use abbreviations like SGH for Small Green Hexagon.
   How long of a sequence can you make?
2. Make a pattern with attribute pieces by changing two attributes at a time.
   How long of a sequence can you make?
3. Pick two attributes.
   Make a Venn diagram for the two sets.
   Place the attribute pieces in the correct location.
   Draw this with abbreviations for the pieces like LBT for Large Blue Triangle.
4. Pick three attributes.
   Make a Venn diagram for the three sets.
   Place the attribute pieces in the correct location.
   Draw this with abbreviations for the pieces like LBT for Large Blue Triangle.

You can use the app below if you don't have this set of attribute pieces printed and cut out.

To use the app, select a Venn diagram button, then select "Click" by each subset to see the different attribute options. You can always make up your own attribute like "not  circle" or "primary paint color". Then drag shapes to the correct location.
