BA110A, MS Access
Course Description
MS Access gives you the ability to organize large amounts of data into tables containing specific types of fields with data. Access allows a user to have multiple tables in the database. The tables can then be queried for specific results; forms can be designed for easier input, professional reports can be developed and information can be shared among users easily.
The course is designed to introduce and further apply skills used in MS Access 2019 for business applications with a hands-on approach. Students will gain the following course objectives through course concept practices and practical lab applications.
Most industries today use some type of database software to track their data. It could be industry specific, so it is better suited to one industry. The skills you learn in this course should transfer to any type of database software with regard to tables, queries, reports.
Course Objectives/Outcomes
The student will develop a variety of skills including:
- Office Fundamentals and File Management
- Downloading Files from the Internet/Uploading Files
- Tables and Queries in Relational Databases
- Customize, Analyze, and Summarize Query Data
- Create and Use Professional Forms and Reports
- Data Validation
- Database Functions: IIF, PMT, Date Part
- Action and Specialized Queries
- Integration of Programs
The student will develop workplace skills including:
- Creating professional, accurate, and grammatically correct documents/files
- Maintaining efficient file management techniques and SECURITY OF FILES
- Submitting work on time as would be required in the business world
- Communicating through email using business standards for written communications.
- Accessing Microsoft Access Help System
Assignment & Exam Schedule
Weekly assignments through modules will be provided to students. There will be a midterm and final project. There may also be various quizzes throughout the term, covering concepts of the week.
Course Prerequisite
Basic Computer Knowledge, Keyboarding skills and/or keyboard familiarity. This course is generally for second year students, although students who have good experience using computers should be okay too.

Windows Operating System (Windows 10, Windows 8, Windows 7 should all be fine)

Note: Mac/Apple Computers will not run Access.
Criteria for Acceptable Performance
Completion of all assignments and exams is required. If you do not complete ALL of the assigned units or skill reviews (must complete at least one assignment from each assigned unit), you cannot receive a grade higher than C. The midterm and final exams are required to receive a final grade in the course.
Late Work
Late work is accepted at 50% for up to seven days past due date.
Assignments Grading Scale
Your work will be graded based on the following scale. It will be graded for accuracy, setup and professional appearance. Late work will be penalized. Periodic grade updates are provided.

Final Composite Grade
Grades will be rounded up only when student overall grades is equal to or greater than .7 tenths closer to the next letter grade. Examples: A grade of 89.5% will be rounded to an A. A grade of 89.4% will not be rounded to an A.
The composite of categories for the final grade will be based on the following scale:
A = 90 to 100%
B = 89 to 80%
C = 79 to 70%
D = 69 to 60%
F = 59 to 30%
NC = Below 30%
